52/366 [Maiden voyage]

Maiden voyage

The Cunard Line’s latest star was at Station Pier for the day on her maiden voyage round the world. She is going on to Sydney where her departure from the harbour is timed to coincide with the arrival of the QEII on her last voyage. It was the promise of fireworks on departure this evening that drew me, and thousands of others, down to the water’s edge. It got markedly cooler as the sun went down. The ferry to Tasmania left, dwarfed by its dockside companion, its lights becoming smaller as it disappeared towards the Heads. An hour behind time, the Queen Victoria majestically boomed her intention to depart and swung away from the pier as the first fireworks lit up the night.
