60/366 [Homecoming]

It’s a warm night full of the sounds of late summer – cicadas racket, frogmouths and owls gentle calls, the hesitant steps of possums heading out to do whatever nocturnal mammals do, the swishing of the gum leaves in the warm breeze, mosquitoes dive bombing their targets. The dark violet sky fills with glittering points of light and the windows of neighbouring houses fill with warmth. A pair of discarded sneakers lie where they were left after soccer practice. I move reluctantly towards the house, unwilling to say goodbye to summer just quite yet.
