Trestle bridge

We are only 20km from the centre of the city. This trestle bridge was built when the railway finally came out to Eltham. The modern trains still travel over it daily. In this high tech world of computers and digital communications I find it amusing that when the train reaches Greensborough the driver of the Hurstbridge bound train has to collect a special stick from the driver of the city bound train from Eltham before he can proceed. Once his train reaches Eltham station, the stick exchange happens again. So there is no chance of two trains meeting on this bridge, head on, thanks to the stick relay.
