179/366 [Of the Superb Fairy Wren and other things]

This lovely tea cloth was my mother’s pride and joy although she barely used it. With five unruly children and a business to run there was little time for the niceties of life such as afternoon tea or playing ladies. My grannie had embroidered this very Australian design onto linen – a beautiful representation of little blue wrens and the gorgeously scented boronia – finishing it off with a drawn thread hem. As someone who is totally hamfisted with a fine needle, as mentioned elsewhere in this project, I can truly appreciate the work that has gone into this cloth and love the way it looks against the polished timber grain of my dining table.
