291/366 [Pie in the sky]

This strange looking sculpture can be found at the Melbourne Showgrounds. It was built in 1977 by a large catering company and surprise, surprise, the largest maker of meat pies in the country. It is the landmark pointed out by harried parents to children hyped up on sugar and excitement as the place to meet should they get lost at the Show.

Most Australian children grow up learning how to eat one of these immortalised objects, usually covered with tomato sauce, held in a paper bag, without burning the insides of their mouths or losing half the contents down the front of their persons. And they are best enjoyed in a howling gale at a football stadium while shouting rude comments at the umpire in between bites.

I read on the plaque at the base that this fine objets d’art has been recently Heritage listed. It looked lonely this morning with no one there for a rendezvous.
