341/366 [Something like a Christmas tree]

When my girlfriend and I began exchanging Christmas gifts we were unmarried and living at home with our parents. We both adored the Christmas season and without ever discussing it we began our own holiday tradition of gift giving with a totally Christmas theme. It is getting harder now to find items that are fresh and new and that reflect her unique style. And that I haven’t given her in the past. She bought a new house this year as well – very modern and minimalist –  totally different to the traditional feel of her old home. Last week, completely by accident, I saw the perfect thing and now it sits, beautifully wrapped by the store, as the first gift under our tree.

One very extravagent year, when our respective children were still small, this Christmas tree lamp was our gift from their family. And every year, when I take it out and put it on the table near our front door, I reflect on our long friendship, filled with much love, shared laughter and tears, and represented every Christmas by the soft green light that welcomes us home.
