353/366 [Candlelight and good cheer]

The night comes slowly and my Christmas votives do not illuminate or cast a shadow until well after 9 o’clock when the house has gone quiet.  But, as Christmas looms ever closer, I am acutely aware that in just a few days time the planet will have reached the limit of its inclination towards the sun and must begin its swing back the other way. It is always a bitter-sweet moment.

  1. Meanwhile, we’re waiting for the planet to reach the darkest, dankest place furthest from the sun and then, thank heaven, swing back into the sunshine. How strange. It’s a bittersweet moment here too. For now we must climb back out of the belly of the year and start again.

We can light our candles at 3:30 in the afternoon at the moment.
